The Balvenie distillery is a Speyside single malt Scotch whisky distillery in Dufftown, Scotland, owned by William Grant & Sons. In early 1892 work began to convert an 18th-century mansion (Balvenie New House) into a distillery. The building took fifteen months to complete, and on 1 May 1893, the first distillation took place at the Balvenie Distillery. Balvenie is one of the few Scottish distilleries with its own source of locally grown barley, floor malting and cooperage.

The follow-up to the distillery's popular Tun 1402 series, Tun 1509 is made with a bigger marrying tun. To create the much-anticipated The Balvenie Tun 1509 Batch No. 3 – which will be limited to just 8,850 bottles worldwide – Malt Master David C. Stewart hand-selected 31 of the finest casks from the distillery’s precious aged whisky stocks. He used 12 sherry butts distilled between 1989 and 1992, 11 American oak hogsheads distilled in 1989 and eight refill American Oak butts distilled in 1992 and 1993. All were transferred to the single marrying vessel, which for several months sat in Warehouse 24 before bottling.
