The Glenrothes Distillery was founded in 1878 by James Stuart & Co., and is located in the town of Rothes within the Speyside region. Glenrothes is renowned for their whiskies aged in sherry-seasoned European oak casks, though they also offer bourbon cask-aged products to a much smaller extent. The distillery has endured fires and explosions (remember how flammable their products are!) in 1897, 1903, 1922, 1962 but was able to bounce back each time, and has seen a steady expansion from the original two stills to the current five wash stills and five spirit stills.

Since 2018, Glenrothes has replaced its vintage bottlings with non-vintage 10, 12, 18 and 25 years age statements, making this 1989 vintage bottle a real rarity. Bottled in 2000, this bottle received the following notes from famed whisky writer Dave Broom: "'The spiciness comes right through from the start giving a subtle lift to the rich fruits, light sherry and ginger loaf...A very elegant, superbly balanced middle-weight dram".
